Jim completed his Bachelor of Arts in Economic and Political Science at McGill University prior to attending Osgoode Hall Law School. He also obtained his Master of Laws in Taxation Law from Osgoode Hall. Created Queen’s Counsel in 1992, Jim practises in the areas of federal and provincial income tax, federal and provincial sales taxes and other taxes, acquisitions, mergers, corporate reorganizations, estate planning, wills, trusts and estates.
He is a member of the Law Society of Upper Canada, the Canadian Bar Association, the American Bar Association (Taxation Subsection), the Toronto Lawyers Association, the Canadian Tax Foundation and the Lawyers’ Club of Toronto. He was the chair of the Minister of Finance’s Expert Panel on Financial Security for Children with Severe Disabilities and was also a member of the Minister of Finance’s Panel on Canada’s International Tax System. Jim was first appointed to the Royal Canadian Mint’s Board of Directors in 2006, as Chair of the Governance and Nominating Committee and served as Vice-Chairman of the Board. Mr. Love was then appointed Chairman of the Board of Directors in 2009 for a five-year term. In 2010 Jim received the York University Environmental Studies Friend of the Faculty Award for his dedication to the environment and sustainability. He also received the Bryden Alumni Award for Outstanding Contribution, also from York University.
Jim is a Founder, Director, Vice-Chairman, President and Chief Executive Officer of Legacy Private Trust and a founding partner of the Love & Whalen Law Firm where he currently practises.
